Paolo Maggis (Milan, 1978) is an Italian artist known primarily for his work in painting and contemporary art. Since his debut in 2000, he has participated in and exhibited in private galleries, public spaces, and museums, mainly in Italy, Spain, and Germany, countries where he has lived and with which he maintains an active artistic relationship. A friend and fellow student of Bigas Luna (Bioners, Carlo Cambi Editore, 2012), he actively collaborates with artists, writers, and musicians.
In addition to her personal exhibition projects, it is worth highlighting the INTERSECTION project, carried out in collaboration with the video artist Vanessa Pey, which reaches its third edition in September 2023 at the Associazione 21 in Lodi.
He has published a book of poetry entitled Il nome di Dio (The Name of God), published by Samuele Editore and presented at both the Museo del ‘900 and the MUDEC in Milan. He collaborates with the literature and poetry magazine Satisfisction, composes music, and his musical project tHE cRAVING rOOTS released its first album, Indigo, in September 2023 and its second, Dried Flowers, in September 2024.
He is currently collaborating as a set designer and creative director with the Milanese dance company Ormarslab on a contemporary dance and poetry performance that will tour Italian theaters.
ARTISTIC RESEARCH BY PAOLO MAGGIS
Paolo Maggis’s artistic research is based on a gestural and refined oil painting style that develops naturally through brushstrokes and layering. The abstract roots of his work allow forms to sometimes emerge and at other times merge back into the paint itself, which seeks—in every gesture—the force of a definitive act and the power of free choice.
His painting naturally incorporates highly aesthetic and traditional techniques, such as glazing and color subtraction, but also ventures into more disruptive territories, breaking with the structure through bold and decisive gestures that reinforce or fracture the surface.
Although the imprint of reality is often quite evident, his pictorial approach unfolds through a formal visual circuit, constructed like a symphonic piece composed of wordless notes. It is sensations, memories sedimented over time, and forms that refract reality through a subjective lens that drive reflection.
