Dark as Light presents a selection of recent paintings by Paolo Maggis.
Situated on the threshold between figuration and abstraction, her work constructs images in which darkness does not act as an absence, but as a structural element that shapes form, depth, and perception.
The paintings develop through layers, glazes, and accumulated gestures, configuring dense pictorial fields where the figure remains unstable and partially indeterminate. Rather than proposing closed narratives, the works maintain a constant tension between appearance and dissolution.
Regarding the conceptual focus of the exhibition, Maggis points out:
“In the case of light, the sum of all colors gives white, but in painting, if we combine all colors, the result is black, which is mistakenly considered the color of negation, when in reality it is a force that, through its inverse light, suspends time and dissolves context. It is a type of darkness that, like light, burns away the contours and limits of forms.”
From a technical point of view, the artist advocates stratification and material depth as essential elements of the painting process:
“From Manet onwards, painting eliminated glazes and stratifications, which I have recovered because they create the magic of volume and depth and slow down the creative rhythm in the frenetic, superficial and ‘Instagrammable’ rhythm of contemporary Western society.”
Dark as Light coincides with the opening of the new space of the Sergi Sànchez Gallery at Carrer Aribau 76-78, Barcelona, and marks the beginning of a new stage in its exhibition program.
