Antoni Amat · Palimpsest de l’Invisible

The Sergi Sànchez Gallery presents Palimpsest de l’Invisible, the new solo exhibition by Antoni Amat, a project that brings together recent works resulting from years of pictorial research and conceptual reflection. In this exhibition, the artist consolidates a mature and personal voice, where painting becomes a territory of memory, layers, and revelations.

Each of Amat’s canvases functions as a palimpsest, a surface where color, texture, and gesture intertwine in a dialogue between the visible and the invisible. His work doesn’t represent, but rather reveals through transparencies, glazes, and traces. The artist invites the viewer to look beyond the surface and discover the traces of time, emotion, and energy that reside beneath each layer.

 

“In Persephone, the painting unfolds as a field of tension between the material and the chromatic, between density and transparency, between presence and emptiness. The painting works with the energy of opposites; the myth of Persephone appears here as a backdrop, present in the duality between the darkness of infamy and the promise of return, between the earth that encloses and the surface that gives life.”

 

Antoni Amat is a Barcelona-based visual artist whose career combines technical rigor, philosophical exploration, and a constant quest to expand the boundaries of artistic language. Trained at the Barcelona School of Art, he began his career under the influence of Dalí’s surrealism, later moving through constructivist and abstract phases. His practice, marked by experimentation with materials and the incorporation of philosophical and spiritual thought (from Zen to Japanese kintsugi, from Jung to Greek philosophy), has resulted in a profoundly reflective and materially rich body of work.

He has exhibited in cities such as Barcelona, ​​New York, Paris, Berlin, and Milan, and participated in international art fairs like Art Basel Miami and Art Miami Fair. A regular collaborator with the Maeght Gallery, his work has been recognized by critics as a unique contribution to contemporary art. Series such as Unlimited and The Enigma of Alchemy synthesize his interest in gesture, light, and three-dimensionality, transforming each piece into a space for dialogue between matter and idea.
